Plants Photosynthesis and inheritance Topic Target: Lesson 1 How do plants Grow? Lesson aims To study the process of photosynthesis by which plants make their own food, To interpret data linked to the process and learn to explain the term biomass.

Learning outcomes By the end of the lesson you should be able to explain the terms photosynthesis and biomass know that as an organism grows it increases biomass - growth requires food understand the process of photosynthesis - raw materials, role of light and chlorophyll and the word equation

On your mini whiteboards Write down the things you think plants need to grow

Look at the plants Questions What do plants need to grow? Where does their food come from? How? Do plants need soil?

In your books draw a plant and label all the things it needs for growth Summarise how plants grow and define the terms: photosynthesis - biomass -

Photosynthesis and biomass definitions: Photosynthesis is the process a plant uses to make food and grow. Biomass is the mass of materials that a plant or animal is made of.

Photosynthesis research You need to find / confirm the following information through research and record references. (You should give book title, author, and page.) Raw materials required for photosynthesis (2) How these raw materials are taken in by the plant Why light is important How light is absorbed Food made Word equation (Extension symbol equation ) How food is stored in plant

The word and chemical equations for photosynthesis: Sunlight Carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen 6CO2 + 6H20 C6H12O6 + 6O2 Chlorophyll Sunlight Chlorophyll

Four factors affect photosynthesis: Light – if there is more light photosynthesis happens faster Water – if there is not enough water photosynthesis slows down Temperature – the best temperature is about 300C – anything above 400C will slow photosynthesis right down CO2 – if there is more carbon dioxide photosynthesis will happen quicker

Watch the animation and answer the question: Why is deforestation of the Rain Forests a problem? Suggested homework

HOMEWORK:Use a dictionary to find out : What does the word photo mean HOMEWORK:Use a dictionary to find out : What does the word photo mean? What does synthesis mean? What do you think photosynthesis means ? Explain

Learning outcomes Can you explain the terms photosynthesis and biomass explain that as an organism grows it increases biomass - growth requires food understand the process of photosynthesis - raw materials, role of light and chlorophyll and the word equation
