Reminder: Phase Two Format Topic and Research Question (note if revised) Article # 1: Citation, and one *full* paragraph description of what it looks at and why it is a good article for your project. Article #2, #3, and #4 (same as Article #1) Copies of the abstracts of each of the four articles. You can scan these in or copy-paste or print out xerox from the originals.

Looking at your shoes… An activity to get us thinking about how we organize our relationships!

Cliques and Crowds What is a clique? What is a crowd?

Minute Paper Were you a part of a “clique” in high school? Were you a part of a “crowd” in high school? For each, if you were in one(s) describe which one(s) you were in and why. If you were not, why was this the case?

Stability and Change How do you think these are established? –Who determines norms –Who determines membership What affects the stability of cliques? Of crowds?

Heading into Adulthood… What are the “crowds” at UT? Has your “clique” changed? Has your “crowd” changed?

Ethnicity Groups and Peers Cliques tend to be segregated by both ethnicity and economics as children enter adolescence. This is even more the case in diverse schools. Book acknowledges that research on Crowds has centered on predominantly white high schools. Open Question: Is crowd structure the same in schools that are ethnically diverse?

Recall… Identity Development Identity Achievement: You’ve tried out different possibilities and have arrived at what you see as your identity. Identity Moratorium: You’ve tried out different possibilities but do not know what you will identify with in the long term. Identity Foreclosure: You haven’t tried out different possibilities, but have committed to an identity (typically based on parents or on societal expectations). Identity Diffusion You haven’t tried out different possibilities, and haven’t committed to an identity either. In its extreme, prevents a person from functioning.

Individuals and Communities Small Group Discussion Questions: What are some advantages to having cliques or crowds based on ethnicity or social background? What are some disadvantages? Think about this both in terms a) An individual’s identity development b) Our community or society
