BASKET INTERFERENCE Rule 4.6 & 9.11 Who can commit Basket Interference? Basket Interference can occur at either basket by either team. Definition of Basket Rule defines components of basket: Single metal ring Flange & Braces Net NOTE: Remember there are only two piece of equipment involved regarding Basket Interference: One ball, and one basket – not the basket AND the net ( basket includes the net)

BASKET INTERFERENCE Rule 4.6 & 9.11 Imaginary Cylinder: Imagine a cylinder, which is located directly above the basket. The cylinder extends from the top of the basket ring to the ceiling. Location of the Ball: Within the cylinder and touching the basket Within the cylinder and not touching the basket On or Within the Basket

BASKET INTERFERENCE Rule 4.6 & 9.11 What “Touches” Constitutes Basket Interference? Touching the Ball – while any part of the ball is within cylinder Touching the Ball – while the ball is on or within basket Touching the Ball – when the ball is within cylinder Touching the Basket – while the ball is on or within the basket Reaching through the Bottom of the Basket and touching the Ball before it enters the cylinder

BASKET INTERFERENCE Rule 4.6 & 9.11 What is the Penalty for Basket Interference? If illegal touching is by Offense – No points scored If illegal touching is by Defense – points are awarded Points awarded are equal to the value of the points had the try/tap been successful

BASKET INTERFERENCE Rule 4.6 & 9.11 What “Touches” are NOT Basket Interference? Touching the Basket – while the ball is NOT on or in basket Touching the Ball – while no part of the ball is touching the cylinder Touching or Slapping the Backboard is NEVER BI (Could be a Technical Foul)

BASKET INTERFERENCE Rule 4.6 & 9.11 How did the Ball get in the Cylinder? “It does not matter HOW the ball got on or in the basket, nor how the ball got in the cylinder, to rule properly on Basket Interference” In other words – it may be a try, pass, lob or even a throw-in. Either way, the Basket Interference rules apply! It does NOT matter HOW the ball got there.

BASKET INTERFERENCE Rule 4.6 & 9.11 EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE Dunking or attempting a Dunk is NOT BI Blocking or Attempting to Block a Dunk is NOT BI Pulling Down a movable ring, releasing the ring, then the ring contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position IS Basket Interference If the ring sticks down… what then???
