NEXT PROJECT ralph’s pet hotel

Assignment #2: Photo-realistic Rendering of Ralph’s Pet Hotel Assignment Objective : Develop skills in 3ds max rendering production Format : Printed, clipped or taped to board, 36 inches in larger dimension Due: Wednesday March 27 th

Content: at least the following 20’x40’x15’ more or less At least one window, any size At least one door Signage Service counter Dog play area with screen or fence Dog bowl [Custom decorative light fixture] Electric lighting At least one custom material Seating for human and dog Wall base [Crown molding with profile] [Custom decorative light fixture]

Grading criteria: Inclusion of the required elements above. Control of media, and quality of the final print. Difficulty of the modeling, lighting, and materials creation.

starting the project: spatial geometry define a project folder save MAX file – it creates many folders set UNITS set Grid and Snap

drawing building geometry use Walls use Doors use Windows Boxes for ceiling and floor Hide things for easier work flow

spline modeling: common modifiers Extrude Bevel Lathe Sweep

spline modeled objects Signage (text + bevel or bevel profile modifier) Dog bowl (spline + Lathe modifier) Crown molding and base with profile (rectangle + sweep modifier) curtains (spline + extrude + melt + wave or ripple) sculptures (shapes + taper or twist)

common shape modifiers Bend Shell Squeeze Twist Taper Subdivide + wave

shape modeled objects Seating for dogs (sphere + squeeze modifier, or a box + melt + turbosmooth + affect region modifiers) Custom decorative light fixture (use any modeling shapes and modifiers that you like) lighting grid (box + lattice modifier)

materials-based objects Dog play area with screen or fence (use the fence tool, or a custom material with an opacity map) Water (plane + noise)

Compound objects Standard lighting (ceiling rectangle + cylinders for recessed lights + proboolean subtraction) Toggle Auto-grid for work plane

imported furnishings avoid too many polygons! formfonts, turbo squid SketchUp, 3ds max, autocad file formats Many websites out there group for easy manipulation
