TOTAL SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION: MISSION: To be a leader in the Petroleum Industry in S.A. adhering to the Global movement towards developing environmentally friendly and energy efficient business’s. OBJECTIVE: To ensure that TSA build service stations that are sustainable within the environment and are economically viable for both TSA and dealers, taking into account the current status of the Country. OVERVIEW: TSA developed a Sustainable Assessment Tool ( S.B.A.T. ) to evaluate existing sites highlighting areas where TSA could improve future service stations. A matrix was developed which recommended areas for improvement in the existing Premier Design. Kim Hockley 2

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN: The elements selected for improvement were based on the S.B.A.T. results, but general consideration was also included to investigate the reduction of capital expenditure.  ENERGY  WATER  WASTE AND EMISSIONS  MATERIALS  BIODIVERSITY  MANAGEMENT  LOCAL ECONOMY  ACCESS  EDUCATION Kim Hockley 3 TOTAL SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION:

Kim Hockley 8 TOTAL SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION: FINDINGS:  ENERGY Reduce the overall energy consumption of service stations:  Increase the use of daylight in retail, office and preparation areas.  Remove canopy feeder section to increase daylight penetration into retail area  Use motion sensors in low usage areas  Change roof sheeting colour to reduce thermal absorption  Ensure that the building envelope is thermally efficient ( Shop fronts )  Use close door refrigeration  Use air curtains in all refrigerated areas  Convert to gas equipment in kitchen areas  Investigate alternatives to HVAC systems

Kim Hockley 9 TOTAL SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION: FINDINGS:  WATER Reduce the overall mains water consumption of the service station through:  Rainwater harvesting for irrigation purposes.  Install infrared taps on basins.  WASTE AND EMISSIONS Provide a recycling station for use by the service station as well as the pubic.  Implemented with great success.  MATERIALS Investigate the use of alternative materials that have a smaller carbon footprint and cost effective.  Removal of PVC.  Use of recycled materials

Kim Hockley 10 TOTAL SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION: FINDINGS:  BIODIVERSITY To develop a landscape matrix for existing and new service stations that focus on climatic zones  Landscape Architect is developing a matrix per climatic zone to ensure future developments are compliant.  MANAGEMENT Investigate the use of sub-metering to give operators more insight into electrical and water consumption.  Implemented, results to be monitored.  LOCAL ECONOMY To ensure the local community needs and requirements are addressed.  Provide a space for local services are marketed.  Provide retail space for local promotions

Kim Hockley 11 TOTAL SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION: FINDINGS:  ACCESS Expand the current provision of facilities to include:  Postal / Courier Services  Prepaid electricity and account payments  EDUCATION Increase the area for pump attendants to allow room for training and dinning facilities.  Implemented, results to be monitored.

Kim Hockley 12 TOTAL SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION: FINDINGS:  COST BENEFITS TO CONVERT TO SUSTAINABLE SERVICE STATION The following will have long term savings for the operator  Reducing electrical consumption, by way of elevated roofing over retail area, motion sensors in low usage area, solar geyser, using thermal reducing elements, such as reflective roof sheeting and thermal efficient glazing. Water harvesting has reduce our water consumption by way of grey water used for toilet facilities and landscaping.  Monthly water and electricity bill at existing design : Average site R  Monthly water and electricity bill at new sustainable design : Average site R  Percentage cost saving : 59% saving
