Food Additives By Kyra Barrett Period 1

What are Food Additives? Food Additives are ingredients and substances that help give flavor, texture, smell, and or color to a food or major food ingredients.

Every Item in these pictures are possible because of Food Additives

How Can Food Additives be Good? Food Additives we eat fall into two categories: Natural and Artificial. If we use natural food additives we can add in chemicals that better the food, like antioxidants. “Antioxidants, are the chemicals found in colorful fruits and vegetables that have special properties to prevent or even treat certain diseases.” (“Food Additives”, Jegtvig, 2012.)

These are Examples of Natural Food Additives

How Can Food Additives be Bad? Some food additives are artificial and involve a lot of chemicals that can really mess with your head! Some foods, such as McDonalds, has so many artificial additives their food has been “found to worsen hyperactivity in children.” (“On the Menu”, Hickman, 2008).

Some Examples of Artificial Food Additives

Where can Food Additives be found? Food Additives can be found in just about every food we eat today!

Everyday Food Additives

Are Food Additives Harmful? Food Additives can be harmful, depending on who your looking at, on one hand if your eating natural food additives you may be paying a lot more than if you were eating at Wendy’s everyday. Artificial Food additives usually contain a lot of chemicals and cause you to gain lots of weight, or just feel really bad about yourself.

Indiana’s use of Food Additives In Indiana we produce lots of corn. That’s pretty simple and everyone knows it. But we get a lot of varieties of corn because of the additives we put in them.

Types of Food Additives Recap: Natural Food Additives: Based off of grown fruits and vegetables that are found usually in nature. Artificial Food Additives: Chemically based preservatives added to food to alter taste or appearance.
