A single path that shows how each living thing gets it’s food. The flow of energy begins with the SUN and transfers through the chain. Always starts with a plant (producer) and ends with a predator! More energy at the beginning than the end.

 Network of many food chains.  Allows an organism to survive better than a food chain because there are more options for food!

1. PRODUCERS: are Plants! They produce or make their own food through photosynthesis! Always on the bottom of the food chain/web and always have the MOST energy. 2. DECOMPOSERS: Organisms that break down dead plant and animal matter. They are at every level of a food chain/web.  Fungus  Bacteria  Worms  Insects  Flies and Larva 3. CONSUMERS: they “consume” – All animals are consumers. The get their energy from what they feed on. Top of the food chain or food web.  A. Carnivore  Eats meat  B. Herbivore  Eats only plants  C. Omnivore  Eats both meat and plants

 Shows how much energy goes from one level to the next…. “CHEMICAL ENERGY”  Energy decreases as you move to the top of the pyramid.  10% RULE: SAYS only 10% of the chemical energy transfers from one trophic level to the next trophic level.

 It leaves behind ________ and _________ in the organic material that made up its body.  Scavengers can feed on carcass,but they leave behind a LARGE amount of energy and nutrients.  Bones, feathers, and exoskeletons,fur, and wood contain unused energy.  DECOMPOSERS complete the process by changing the leftover organic matter into _________ ________ and ____________.

 Shows an organisms position in a food chain.  Producers have LOTS of energy.  10% RULE: SAYS only 10% of the chemical energy transfers from one trophic level to the next trophic level.

Lots of ENERGY!!! Very little Energy!

 Occurs in all plants at the cellular level!  Releases energy captured and stored within a plant.  Opposite of photosynthesis…does NOT require light! Glucose + Oxygen CO2+ water + energy Respiration allows a plant to process food and grow.

 Total mass of all living matter in a given area.  Biomass is converted into ENERGY!!  This energy is released as HEAT!
