VIETNAMESE – RUSSIAN COLLABORATIVE RESEARCHES The past and the future Dao Viet Ha Institute of Oceanography

Collaborative research on Vietnamese reef communities: Phu Khanh Province, The project " South China Sea " (leaded by A.V.Zhirmunsky and Le Trong Phan)

The 1 st marine expedition had been carried out since February, 16 to June, 11, 1981 aboard S/V “Kallisto” and “Berill” Sites of study: Northern part of Gulf of Tonkin up to southern islands Condao, Spratlys (In total more than 60 reefs in 12 various areas were investigated)

Research on sedimentation and turbulence processes in various zones of a reef of Gulf of Tonkin : Many coastal sites were sampling for biodiversity

Joint experimental works on cultivation ofseaweedKappaphycus

Archivements   3 Soviet-Vietnamese symposiums (1981, 1984, 1986)several of workshopsin Nhatrang, Moscow and Vladivostok   Agreement on scientific cooperation between IMB and IO was signed at Sept., 2002 Vietnam - Russian seminar on tropical marine ecosystem of Ha Long area (Haiphong, 1997)

Archivements  2 doctor thesis dissertations  Several tens of scientific papers were published in leading Russian and world journals  Series of collection of papers and monographs were published Papers and monographs "Scleractinian Corals of Vietnam"

Archivements   The species composition of hermatypic corals with 356 species, and 71 genus was reported including 124 species were not known for Vietnam before and 12 species are the new to a science.   The written collection of scleractinians is the third in the World on completeness, and concerning the coast of Vietnam has no world analogues Collection of hermatypic corals in the Museum of Institute of Marine Biology

Archivements   Recommendations on cultivation of mass species of corals for restoration of disturbed reefs are given Mass species of coral Pocillopora Verrucosa can be used for cultivation   Species composition and structure of reef communities, with the new insights into main principles of photosynthetic and physiological processes of symbiosis between zooxanthellae and hermatypic corals
