PROPORTION DESIGN SEMINAR

PROPORTION IS… Relationship of one part to another, or to the whole, or between one object and another Defined in terms of magnitude (size), quantity, or degree

WHEN IS PROPORTION NOTICEABLE? Often not even noticeable until something is out of proportion

SCALE Referring to the size of an object

MATHEMATICS Has developed the golden section: Given two parts, one smaller and one larger, the ratio between the smaller part and the larger part must be the same as the ration between the larger part and the whole

CREATING GOOD PROPORTION 1.Place together elements that are similar in character or have a feature in common. 2.Create major and minor areas in the design, as equal parts can quickly become monotonous and boring. 3.Dividing up the composition in halves, quarters and thirds should be avoided. A subtle relationship creates a more dynamic design.

IN INTERIOR DESIGN Consider: the parts of a design element (i.e. a piece of furniture); several design elements (i.e. an arrangement of furniture); elements and its enclosure (i.e. furniture and interior that contains it).

In general, when you sense that there’s neither too little nor too much of an element or characteristic in a room, and the interior looks harmonious, it means that you’ve achieved proportion.
