Lesson 4: Lesson 4: Integers (Group Lesson) Per 3, 5: 10/1/15 Per 2, 4, 6: 10/2/15

Assign Roles: Team Captain (two): Will make sure everyone is on task and understands each section before moving forward. Also, make sure everyone is taking smart notes. “Leave No Man (or Woman) Behind”

Assign Roles: Materials Manager: Gathers all necessary materials for completion of lesson and keeps them organized when returning (white boards, practice sheets, etc).

Assign Roles: CFU Leader: Will make sure everyone completes “Whiteboard CFU” without looking at their notes. Make sure everyone in group shares their answers and works together in figuring out what mistakes were made.

Lesson Objectives Group will be able to…  Effectively and efficiently take concise notes on the topic of integers.  Understand and apply the rules of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers

How to Take Smart Notes: 1)Review the slide before taking any notes. Understand the content before writing anything down. 2)Write notes on slide in a way that YOU will understand! 3)There is not point of taking notes on a section and moving on until you have understood what you wrote!

Rules for Adding & Subtracting Integers: Two like signs in the middle become a positive sign which means you add. +(+)3+(+2) = = 5 -(-)6-(-3) = = 9 Two unlike signs in the middle become a negative sign which means you subtract. +(-)7+(-2) = = 5 -(+)8-(+2) = = 6

Adding Integers with Same Sign: Add their values, and give the result the same sign. Examples: = 7 (-7) + (-2) = -(7 + 2) = -9 (-80) + (-34) = -( ) = -114

Adding Integers w/ Different Signs: Two unlike signs turn into a “negative sign” Example: 8 + (-3) = ? 8-3= 5 Therefore, 8 + (-3) = 5.

Example: = ? -22 and 11 becomes _____ and _____. Subtracting the smaller from the larger gives = ___ Larger number= -22 so result will be - So, = -11.

STOP! Wait for everyone to finish taking notes CLOSE YOUR COMPOSITION BOOK AND SHARE WHAT YOU JUST LEARNED! Team Captain…have everyone explain rules for adding integers! Go over answers from the last slide.

Subtracting Integers: When subtracting integers, add the opposite (-5) = 12 + (5) = ____ = -8 + (-7) = ____ (-40) = (40) = ____

STOP! Wait for everyone to finish taking notes CLOSE YOUR COMPOSITION BOOK AND SHARE WHAT YOU JUST LEARNED! Team Captain…have everyone explain rules for subtracting integers! Go over the answers from the last slide.

MATERIALS MANAGER…. PLEASE GET WHITE BOARDS AND SOCKS FOR YOUR GROUP! CFU LEADER… YOU WILL LEAD THE WHITEBOARD CFU ON THE NEXT FEW SLIDES.

Whiteboard CFU (check for understanding) 38+(-5)=

Whiteboard CFU (check for understanding) (-1)-(-40)=

Whiteboard CFU (check for understanding) (-34)+50=

Whiteboard CFU (check for understanding) 10+3-(-8)=

Whiteboard CFU (check for understanding) 2- (-9)-8=

Multiplying/Dividing Integers Helpful Trick to remember the rules for multiplying/dividing:

Multiplying Integers Examples: 1)-12 X -4= ____ 2) -10 X -10= ____ 3) 11 X -3= ____

Dividing Integers Examples: 1) -48 ÷ 8= 2) 50 ÷ -10= 3) -45 ÷ -5=

STOP! Wait for everyone to finish taking notes CLOSE YOUR COMPOSITION BOOK AND SHARE WHAT YOU JUST LEARNED! Team Captain…have everyone in your group share one concept related to this section. Go over answers from last two slides.

Summary of Lesson: On a half-sheet of paper: Write to an absent student and explain how to do the following: Add integers Subtract integers Rules for multiplying and dividing integers * See next slide for further directions.

MATERIALS MANAGER… collect all summaries and turn them in to me. Then return all boards and socks. Thank you for your services!
