POINTS LINES PLANES

Points Create a point using the play dough at your group. What will it look like? What are the characteristics of the point you made? Talk about these questions with your group and compare your points!

Points Traits of Points: Points have no dimension Like each one of you has a name, points also need to be labeled! Points can be labeled with letters Use the whiteboards and Expos to Label your point. A Point A

Lines Create a line using the play dough. What are the characteristics of your line? Compare your line with the other lines created in your group.

Lines Traits of a line: A line is one dimension Lines are represented with arrowheads and run through at least two points. What do the arrowheads mean? Can a line run through a single point? How do you think you should label your line? A B

Lines Now add the line you created to your white board. Use the point you have already labeled and an additional point to create your line. Use any two points on a line to name it. Ex: Line m line AB line BA m

Planes What can you use to represent a plane? Traits of a plane: Planes are two dimensions Planes are represented by a shape that looks like a floor and it extends without end How many points do you think a plane runs through? Where will the points be located?

Planes Planes go through any three points that are not on the same line. Use your whiteboard and play dough to create a plane with labeled points. Use the three points not on the same line to label your plane. Ex: plane M plane ABC

More to Know about Points! Collinear Points -points on the same line Coplanar Points -points that lie on the same plane Your turn: Create collinear points and coplanar points with your play dough!

Line Segment A line segment has two endpoints and contains all points that lie in between Create a line segment with your play dough and label it! AB BA A B Endpoint!

Ray A ray consists of an endpoint and all points that lie on same side of endpoint. A B Endpoint C D ACBD What do you notice about labeling rays? Create your own ray using the play dough and your white board!

Skew Lines Skew lines are lines that do NOT intersect and are NOT coplanar. Plane M contains Line g. -This means Line g lies on Plane M.
