Brainstorming Think of a single class session you have recently taught or experienced. List all of the activities in which students/ participants engaged in during the class session (i.e. listened to lecture, viewed slides, pair-wise discussions, quiz, etc). Then in pairs discuss what type of technology you would need to recreate/ adapt those activities/ experiences in an online classroom.
Examples of Ways to Convert In-Class Activities for an On-Line Environment
Suggested Steps for Converting to an Online, Synchronous Classroom List out what you want to do in class, in detail. For example: –Hear and see each other –Move students into small groups for discussion –Have a board to write on Review technologies and map how the technology will allow you to do each of the activities listed above. Consider what additional technologies you will need to support the online classroom. For example: –Moodle or for Course Management –Skype for out of class, pair-wise discussions – for sharing materials
Suggested Steps cont’d Consult with DoIT Academic Technologies Storyboard the course (see example in Resources) Develop detailed weekly class plans (see example in Resources) Develop the 1 st class session to allow students to practice the technology Practice before each class session until you gain confidence with the technology
End-of-session Reflection What idea(s) are you taking from today’s session that you could see yourself using in your practice?
