Why is it important to do so? Women and Men are different! Different levels of difference concerning health – Sex = biological: chromosomes, hormonal profiles, internal and external sex organs – Gender = sociocultural process: behaviour, lifestyle, life experience Effect – Manifestation in Epidemiology and Pathophysiology of diseases – Approach to Health Care Systems Target – More efficient Health Care – Gender-based prevention measures

What do the others do? Implementation of sex and gender aspects into the undergraduate medical education – Radboud University in the Netherlands – Umea University Sweden – Canadian and American Universities – University of Nijmwegen – Charité - Medical University of Berlin Germany

Where to begin? Areas of necessary intervention concerning the role of sex and gender, i.e.: – Prevention – Diagnosis – Treatment – Compliance – Pharmacology – Interaction between doctor and patient …every aspect is connected to sex and gender in a way!

Where to begin? Need of Data! Implementation into medical Education Evaluation

Restrictions and Obstacles! ‚Feminism‘? – NO! It‘s always both, women and men! ‚Higher Costs by more animal work and the need of more patients in research‘ – BUT that will lead to more precise diagnosis, therapy and better compliance!

How to proceed? 8 Steps Approach 1 Systematic Research of sex and gender related facts 2 Convincing the stakeholders 3 Working on concepts with the lecturers 4 Counseling of individual faculty members 5 Support for formulating gender medicine-related parts of the course description and specific learning objectives 6 Monitoring the entry of these learning objectives into the process 7 Participation in exemplary courses 8 Evaluation of the concepts by the students
