ANCIENT GREECE

WHAT IS A CITY- STATE? Greeks were separated by mountains. Each group formed a “city-state” which had its own form of government and way of doing things.

DESCRIBE THE SPARTANS. Very powerful city-state Citizenship was very important. Spartans were isolated and independent-did not want to trade or exchange ideas with outsiders.

DESCRIBE THE ATHENIANS. Also grouped people into citizens, slaves, and outsiders. Athenians wanted to learn from the outside world. Created the idea of a democracy.

WHAT IS A DEMOCRACY? Democracy-rule by the people

WHO DID THE GREEKS WORSHIP? DESCRIBE THE GODS. The Ancient Greeks worshipped gods and goddesses. They were responsible for all of nature. They looked like people and felt human emotions. However, they were immortal.

WHY WERE THE OLYMPIC GAMES STARTED? The Olympics were started as a religious ceremony to honor Zeus (the chief god).

WHAT STARTED THE PERSIAN WARS? Greeks set up cities in the Persian empire, but refused to pay Persian taxes. The Persians attacked the Greeks. After a 20 year war, the Greeks defeated the Persians.

LIST SEVERAL WAYS THAT THE GREEKS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO OUR SOCIETY.
