SCAT TEST
STRESS AND PERFORMANCE A)Stress= Reaction to perceived pressure. B)2 Types of stress: Eustress (good), Distress (bad). C)Both affect the sympathetic nervous system: epinephrine (adrenaline) is produced to heighten awareness and cause arousal. “Fight or Flight.” D)Goal is to have balance between adrenaline kick and being relaxed to obtain peak performance.
What causes you stress? How do you respond to stress?
STRESS PROCESS Stress=Stressors---Appraisal---Stress Response Stress Responses may affect: The Big 4 1)Motor Skill execution (coordination). 2)Thinking: When the brain feels stress the brain shuts down and achievement decreases. 3)Emotional stability. 4)Physical response (reaction time and effort)
PHYSIOLOGICAL STRESSORS Physiological Stressors result in increased physical arousal (activation) and changes in the nervous and endocrine systems. Inhibits digestion, stimulates glucose release, secretion of adrenaline, relaxes bladder, increase heart rate, respiration, and perspiration, dilation of pupils, pooling of blood into the mass muscles. The above is NORMAL and is necessary. What is the danger? Over activation!!
Arousal Stress Anxiety Environmental Demand (Physical & Psychological) Individuals Perception of the Environmental Demand (Amount of threat perceived) Stress Response (Arousal, muscle tension, attention changes and state anxiety) Behavioral Consequences (Performance and outcome) Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4
OVER ACTIVATION * Results in being “tight” or “tired.” * Also results in: A)Poor decision making (Dumb mistakes) B)Excessive physical effort (Play too fast of a pace) C)Skill execution errors (Lack of execution) D)Fatigue (Also includes being scared to fail)
PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESSORS 1)Threats to self-esteem. 2)Self-expectations. 3)Expectations of others (fans, coaches, parents, etc) Why are these stressors? *Your response may be compromised. If so you will lose control, become frustrated or play with fear.
What do you do to reduce stress?
PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESSORS If people are bad at something then they avoid doing it OR quit trying. What do you avoid or quit on? Winning streaks vs. losing streaks: Always 2 losses away from a losing streak and 2 wins away from a winning streak. Athletes on losing streaks don’t care about the end result. They typically quit properly preparing or quit trying to put their selves in position to win.
Characteristics of Continuous Winners 1.Confidence. 2.Optimism: Expect positive results. 3.Strong desire/motivation to succeed. 4.Self analysis in failure. 5.High levels of effort. 6.Risk-taking: challenges ones-self.
Characteristics of Continuous Losers 1.Pessimism: doubt and negativity. 2.Sense of futility: pointless. 3.Effort declines. 4.Self-criticism in failure. 5.Denial and cover up: Blames others. 6.Fears risk taking: Stays in comfort zone.
