AHSGE Language Arts 1.7 Identify effective use of voice

Voice Voice refers to the relation of the verb’s action to the subject. The voice of a verb may be active or passive. Think about the words “active” and “passive”. What does active mean? What does the word passive mean?

Active Voice The subject of the sentence performs or causes the action expressed by the verb. Ex. Lily made a mistake. Ex. John helped the other students. Ashley threw the ball at his head. Ask what is the subject? What did the subject do or cause to happen?

Passive Voice The subject receives the action. Active and passive sentences may have a direct object. Ex. The mistake was made by Lily. Ex. The other students were helped by John. Ask what is your subject? Ask action is the subject receiving?

Examples The boys take out the trash. The trash is taken out by the boys. My class is doing the assignment. The assignment is done by my class.

Practice Tell me whether the following sentences are in the active or passive voice. If they are passive, find the direct object. Thomas feeds his tiger. The letter was written by Abraham Lincoln. Nate stubbed his toe. Leslie attends JSU. The game had been won by ten points. The road was crossed by the deer. We saw the game at the stadium. The mountain’s peak was reached by Edward Jones. Jane lost a lot of weight. Royce hit his sister. The conversation was started by Autumn.
