Leukemia Awareness A Web Quest for the 6 th Grade Health Education

Introduction One type of Leukemia (ALL) is the most common of all childhood cancers. One way to understand cancer is to learn about it. You will be researching information about Leukemia specifically. You are going to create informational pamphlets about Leukemia with your group and research helpful ideas to raise money for the fundraiser, Light the Night Walk, in which we will be participating as a team.

Task  You will first obtain information about Leukemia and fill in the questionnaire provided. With this information you will create a pamphlet on Leukemia.  Each group will register under a created group name on our Light the Night Team webpage.  With the pamphlets you have created you will think of ways to fundraise money for your group. We will be donating all of the money collected for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the Light the Night Walk in which we are participating.

The Process Step One: You will first be assigned to groups of 4. Upload and print your questionnaire which you will be filling in individually, while looking up websites and information.questionnaire Watch the video on Leukemia and fill in answers on your questionnaire.Leukemia To answer remaining questions on your questionnaire, research information on the LLS website.LLS Gather as a group and compare and check your information found on your questionnaire. As a group we will all watch Why, Charlie Brown, Why? And determine if we learn anything new about Leukemia and its treatment. We will fill in a KWL chart as a class.WhyCharlie BrownWhyKWL

Step Two: You will gather again with your groups and register your group name under our team on the Light the Night Website.Light the Night Website Look over the Light the Night Website and gather information about why the walk exists and what its purpose is. Be sure you can tell people who donate money to you what (or possibly who) you are walking for. Next as a group you will look at these websites from below and choose two to three fundraising ideas: DIY fundraising Charity Fundraising

Step Three: Each group will break away and start to create their brochures, which they will be using to hand out to anyone donating or interested in learning about Leukemia. Whether you create a brochure on the computer or by hand is entirely up to the group. Once the brochures have been made, the teacher must approve both the brochures and each group’s fundraising ideas. We will have a “fundraising day” where you will put your ideas to use and try to raise money in order to reach your group’s fundraising goal which you would have established on the Light the Night website. HAVE FUN! And know that you are helping to raise money for a GREAT cause!!!!

Evaluation Open up your rubric for your Leukemia brochure and fundraising project and be sure to print out and keep with all of the other documents you printed. This rubric lays out exactly how you will be graded for the project.rubric

Conclusion  Through the process of this project you have now have found out information about Leukemia. Through the knowledge you have collected, you applied that knowledge by making a brochure in order to educate other people about Leukemia. You also became part of a team that raises money towards the help and research to find cures for Leukemia and other childhood cancers! Being part of a team can be hard work, but by educating others on childhood cancers, awareness can be spread everywhere! Raising money helps families everywhere affected by cancer to have the support they need and also the assurance that the medicine and research can help to cure their family member or friend.  Using all the highlighted words in orange to the  left, write up a one page essay using these words describing what you have learned and what it means to you.

A Letter to the Teacher I chose to create a web quest on Leukemia for the two following reasons: Leukemia affected my life greatly when my daughter was diagnosed, and it has affected the lives of those around me, including my family and friends. The ones who were the most concerned were the younger children, specifically my best friend’s eleven year old daughter who had no idea what this meant and was scared for my daughter. This web quest can not only educate these younger students into understanding what Leukemia is but can also help them to understand what happens when a child (and adult) is diagnosed with Leukemia and how it effects their lives. It is important to know that Leukemia is not always a terminal illness, most especially in children. Leukemia and cancer in general can be a touchy topic and sometimes scary, but I believe knowledge is power. I want other children to be aware of this and help to support those around them who may be diagnosed including: classmates, friends, families and even complete strangers. I believe it’s important to teach children how they can have an impact on society and how much it means to help those around them in any way they can. - Andrea Stieg
