FDR and the New Deal “ I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a New Deal for the American people ” President FDR

FDR and the New Deal President FDR guides America through the Great Depression and WWII He inspired support and confidence in people with his “ fireside chats ” (radio address) He surrounded himself with intellectuals as advisors he called his “ brain trust ”

FDR and the New Deal 3 Goals to end the Great Depression: 1. Relief of people suffering 2. Recovery of the economy 3. Reform measures to prevent future depressions

FDR and the New Deal Examples of New Deal programs include: Civilian Conservation Corps: (CCC) Some 2.5 million jobs created for youth to plant trees and build bridges Works Project Administration: (WPA) Gave jobs to millions of Americans to build roads, airports, buildings, playgrounds, and golf courses

FDR and the New Deal FDR also created programs for farmers (AAA), the stock market (SEC) which prevents another crash, and banks (FDIC) that guarantees your money will be there if a bank fails FDR also set a minimum wage (.25) that workers must be paid and established today’s social security program

FDR and the New Deal Some people were not happy with FDR and they said he went too far with his power. The Supreme Court declared certain New Deal programs unconstitutional FDR then threatened to add 6 more judges to the already 9 existing Supreme Court judges who would vote for his new deal programs “ Court Packing Plan ” (15 total judges)

FDR and the New Deal

The New Deal helped Americans by giving them temporary jobs, and the economy by spending money to encourage business growth and production Inevitably it was WWII that ended the depression in 1941
