How Technology Works

Tools of Technology Technology – is using knowledge to develop products and systems that satisfy needs, solve problems and increase our capabilities.

Tools of Technology  Tool – is an object used to carry out work … are instruments of technology.  Needs/Wants – food, water, shelter, communication, recreation, transportation, health care.

Stone Age  Tool – stone axes, etc. .. Used for getting food, protection, cutting wood..etc  People Hunted/gather ed food

Agricultural Age  Tool – hoe, plow, sickle .. Used for getting the ground ready for planting and harvesting  People now farmed and raised animals

Industrial Age  Around the 1700’s new technologies and products exploded onto the scene. Time of mass production of goods in factories.

Information Age  Around the 1950’s there was a new need to gather, share, store information. Time of development of the computer.

Resources of Technology  All technologies rely of seven resources:  People, information, materials, energy, tools/machines, capital (money) and time

Activities of Technology  Five ACTIVITIES:  Manufacturing, Construction, Transportation, Communication, Bio- related technologies

Systems in Technology  Input – is something that is put into the system (ex: setting the temperature)  Process – is that part of the system where something is done.  Output – of a system is the desired result of the systems process. (ex: heat)  Feedback – is information about the output of the system. (ex: thermostat regulates the temp.)
