European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire SSD/SDD Proposal Upgrade 30/08/2012 / Summuary 1- Historic of this reflection 2- Proposal Upgrade 3- Proposal planication

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire History of events & Alarm on SSD/SDD Cooling system Since 2009, we recorded 40 interventions (E-log) on this cooling station. 21 (52%) due to some operations without Alarm (yearly maintenance, replacement of filter etc etc) 19 (48%) due to anomaly & Alarms. Details of these 19 events: 6 (31%) due to «loops faillure» Heaters / temperature sensors etc etc 5 (27%) due to «Pressure Regulators failure» All events on them (break, leak pipping etc) 4 (21%) due to «Main Power supply» All Power cut. 4 (21%) due to «Cooling plant» Pump, Leaks, Control valve etc etc. We could concluded that average 1/3 of the anomalys come from the regulation of the loops. /

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Following last graphic, we can aslo watch that ¼ of the anomalys come for one part, the power supply. So it was investigated to installed a UPS. Actually the power consumption of the plant is arround 32Kw used like that: 6Kw (20%) used for the PLC, vacuum pump, liquid pump 26Kw (80%) used for all the heaters to control loop’s temperatures Power Consumption on SSD/SDD Cooling system During this investigation, we had reply that there is not enough power actually on UPS at point 2. Protected whole the station on UPS is impossible. / Power consumption

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Proposal upgrade Knowledge this problem, Ton asked us the possibility to work properly without heaters. The idea is to modify the primary circuit, switch on the mixed water, changed the temperature control valves on this circuit and remove all heaters. The effects will be to, in same time: -Rediuce the electrical consumption of the plant, so maybe put it on UPS. -Reduice the risk of electrical failure (removed heaters etc etc..). -Simplify the start-up procedure. -Keep a fin tuning of the control of the temperature using mixed water Following this suggestion, we investigated on it…. /

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Check of the control temperature on the mixed water We already have Some other cooling plant using mixed water on the primary circuit. TPC Cooling plant & HMPID Cooling plant used it. We can see that the regulation on mixed water working properly, like this one of SDD who using chilled water. We also asked our CV colleagues, it seems that it will be enough disponibility on the mixed water circuit to add another cooling. HMPID TPC FEEC SDD /

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Removing control temperature on each loops After moving the plant on mixed water, we could remove all heaters, temperatures sensors on each loops... Keeping the both temperature control valve (one for SDD, one for SSD), it will be possible to set different temperature between this two système. X X X 48 loops This modification will reduce the power consumption, without these parts, whole the station could be on UPS. Relay X 48 loops /

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire /

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Actually, 317 I/O are used for whole the plant. After this upgrade, only 214 will stay on it. Simplication of the control cabinet We will reduce the number of I/O of 32.5%, so reduce the risk of alarms coming from it too. Finally we just saw that the Tons’ idea is completly feasible, and it confirms all the effects that we want. /

European Organization for Nuclear Research - Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Proposal Planification It’s impossible to start this upgrade before LS1, we have to buy new control valves, modify piping of the mixed water from chilled water. The time during a technical stop is too short. We can propose to proceed in two step: First Step beginning of LS1: Modify primary circuit (control valves, piping etc etc) implement a new update of the programme who not use the heaters. Test like that during some weeks / month. (this test is to verify the new régulation of the temperature control vale on the mixed water. All the rest of componant will be still connect on the control cabinet but not working, the risk of I/O alarms from them will be still possible) Second Step: After first test, decide to remove all the rest of componant. (heaters, temperatures sensors, Relay cabinet etc etc) Migration to UPS network. /
