Introduction Problem Statement: Students living in the residence halls tend to use more electricity and water than necessary. There is significant room for improvement on systems the students use to control electricity and water usage. Mission Statement: The mission was to design or redesign elements of Penn State University’s campus to be more sustainable and more energy efficient.

Design Focus/Hypothesis Team 5 decided to focus on saving electricity and water to help Penn State University become more sustainable. The team decided that the first step in making the university more sustainable would be conserving resources before beginning to generate energy or water.

Concept Generation Concept A: current system – switch for lights, faucet for water Concept B: student’s ID - lock/unlock door, control the lights, turns water on/off Concept C: student’s key – control lights, student’s ID card – turns water on/off Concept D: student’s ID – controls lights, turns water on/off Concept E: student’s key – controls lights, turns water on/off

Design Selected Concept E  light system will be controlled by the key that opens the dorm room door  students will have to insert their key into the switch located inside the room  will create a system that allows students to have the lights on when they are in their rooms, but not when the door is locked from the outside  water system will be controlled by the students’ keys, activates a secondary valve on the water supply for each sink  students can turn either valve while key is inserted to control the temperature of the water

Implementation Start with East Halls Electrical switches will be swapped with new key switches Water conservation switches will be installed in all restrooms Results for conservation of electricity and water will be recorded When desired results are reached, installation will continue in the rest of the residence halls
