First Preparatory Committee Meeting for the sixth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP6) to the Tehran Convention November 2014, Baku, Azerbaijan

The main goal was to provide a discussion forum centered on the role and mechanisms of public participation and governmental bodies in the implementation of the Tehran Convention and efforts to address the protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea.

The representatives of the following organizations attended the meeting:  Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Azerbaijan  State Maritime Administration of the Republic of Azerbaijan  “Asersu” OJSC  SOCAR  BP-Azerbaijan company  UNDP in Azerbaijan  NGOs (Ecological Society "Ruzgar", Center for the “National Environment Outlook“, “Azerbaijan Society for the Protection of Animals, “Azerbaijan Youth Union” and etc.). 

 The cleaning up action was attended by more than 200 people.  A total of 2 hectares of an area of the coastal zone was cleared of the scattered litter and later utilized.

In the framework of "World Maritime Day" the celebration of “Caspian Week” was arranged by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan to raise public awareness of environmental issues of the Caspian Sea. In this context volunteer clean up activities were conducted in in the region (particularly in Nabran, Sumgayit, Baku, Neftchala, Jalilabad, Lankaran, Astara cities) along the coastal zone of the Caspian Sea. Moreover, the lectures on the environmental topics were delivered in the secondary schools.
