Word break down What does “bio” mean? – What is a biography? – What does it mean to write your instagram bio? What does “-ology”mean? – Psychology? Sociology? – Bonus points: campanology?

Biology Biology means the study of life Based on that definition, what should we learn in this class?

What does it mean to be living?

Lucky for us, scientists created a list of 7 criteria that an organism must meet in order to be classified as ‘living’

7 Characteristics of Life 1. All living things are composed of cells.

Matter Matter is anything and everything that takes up space – Desks, you, air, bananas, cockroaches etc. All matter, living and non-living, is made up of atoms – These are like tiny Legos that get put together to make up something larger

Atoms A computer is made up of atoms You are made up of atoms What is the difference?

7 Characteristics of Life 2. All living things have metabolism and use energy. This is usually in the form of ATP. What do we need energy for?

7 Characteristics of Life 3. Reproduce and have heredity Can be sexual or asexual

7 Characteristics of Life

4. Grow and Develop

7 Characteristics of Life 5. Respond to stimuli What is a stimulus? In this picture, what is responding?

7 Characteristics of Life 6. Evolve and adapt over time What is the difference?

Evolution: genetic change over time – Individuals do NOT evolve – Populations Evolve Adaptation: change in order to better fit the environment – Individuals CAN adapt

7 Characteristics of Life 7. Maintain homeostasis

Homeostasis: the ability of a system to maintain equilibrium

What about viruses??? Viruses do: have DNA or RNA, respond to stimuli, evolve, require energy Viruses are not: able to reproduce on their own, made up of cell(s),

Ebola Virus
