June 2010 – May 2011 June 2011 – May 2012 Change percentage Basic Infection rate % decrease Basic fall incident rate % decrease Skilled infection rate % decrease Skilled fall incident rate % decrease Since the bed numbers increased from the old building to this one, I have calculated the rates per 100 resident days. This gives a true comparison. I then looked over a 12 month period. June of 2012 thru May of 2011 and compared it to June of 2011 thru May 2012.
We feel reductions in infection, falls and behavior issues are all related to the environment and culture change. -Private rooms with their own bathrooms (infect/falls/beh) -Smaller dining rooms vs tray line dining (infect/behaviors) -We have seen decreases in behaviors (residents own space) -The same staff caring for the same resident (happier staff) -Staff relationships and teamwork has improved -Learning Circles – Creator Action Pact -Higher expectations placed on staff accountability by peers On our skilled unit our resident population which is at higher risk for infections has increased. We now have more residents with tube feeding, IV’s and a few more with urinary catheters.
