General Election 2010 What the Parties Say – Human Rights and Freedoms

The Conservative Party – Human Rights and Freedoms Get rid of the idea of identity cards and a data base with everyone’s details on it. People should only be kept by the police for a maximum of 28 days before they are charged. Get rid of the Human Rights Act and write a British Bill of Rights. Change the laws which protect people from terrorism. Stop local councils having the right to spy on people. Look at getting rid of laws which some people say treat Muslims unfairly. Keep the DNA information of criminals, but if someone is found innocent, destroy their DNA sample.

The Labour Party – Human Rights and Freedoms Only allow people to be kept in prison for 28 days without being charged (although originally wanted it to be 42 days). Have introduced 5 laws which protect people against terrorism. All non-British people must have an identity card by People can have an identity card if they choose to and their details and the details of all passport holders are kept on a database. Keep holding the DNA from criminals but make sure if someone is found innocent, their DNA is removed and destroyed after a fixed period of between six and 12 years.

The Liberal Democrats – Human Rights and Freedoms People should not be allowed to be kept in prison without charge for more than 14 days. The rules of how Britain is ruled would be written down (and people would vote on if they agreed to it or not). This would say what the Government can and cannot do and there should be a Bill of Rights saying what rights we have. Get rid of the idea of Identity Cards and not have a database with people’s details on. The DNA of people who are innocent should not be kept without their permission. Allow police to check up when it is said that people have been tortured. Allow parents to stop their children being fingerprinted at school. Stop CCTV being used as much. People should be allowed to check up on details which are held about them.

The Green Party– Human Rights and Freedoms Support transfer of policing and justice powers to the Northern Ireland Assembly.

UKIP – Human Rights and Freedoms Get rid of the Human Rights Act. Against identity cards and the Government keeping people’s records on computer. Get rid of non-British people from the country who support terrorism. Put British people who support terrorism into prison. Allow people’s phones to be bugged and the information used to put them into prison for terrorism. Only people who have been convicted should have their DNA kept by the police.
