Presentation transcript:

Night Aviation Regiment consisted entirely of women, even the hardest work was performed by females.

Plywood, light aircraft Po-2 was not suitable for fierce battles against the German invaders. Germans openly laughed at the sight of this fragile structure. The risk was very great, as Po-2 burned quickly and was completely devoid of any armor or any other type of protection. Po-2

If earlier Germans laughed at the mention of "Kuban whatnot," after raids with quite big damage they realized the strength of this planes. Probably Germans simply could not assume that such feats are capable for Soviet girls.

Every night, pilots of the 588 Regiment performed several short-range flights and dropped bombs on enemy positions. According to some sources, per night crews made 18 sorties. Nazis were terrified and they couldn’t sleep so they called the 588 Regiment “Night witches”

Night witches took part in many battles such as: defense Vladikavkaz Battle of the Terek, Kuban and Sevastopol Fight on the River Pronya, flights to Poland Fighting in East Prussia. March, Battles for Gdansk and Gdynia. On the 15 th of October 1945 regiment was disbanded. Aircrew Regiment

According to incomplete statistics, the regiment destroyed or damaged: 17 crossings. 9 trains. 2 railway stations. 46 warehouses. 12 tanks with fuel. 1 the aircraft. 2 barges. 76 cars. 86 firing points. 11 spotlights. Sumarokova T., G. Bespalova, N. Meklin, E.Ryabova, M. Smirnova, T. Makarova, M. Chechneva.
