The African Rainforest By Mitch Kelley

African Rainforests are disappearing!  Road construction, deforestation, slash and burn farming have caused 90 percent of Africa’s rainforests to be destroyed!

The baka tribe  This is the tribe that lives in the rainforest. One of their customs is dam fishing. They throw pulp of a vine in the river. When the fish goes to the surface to eat it, a person hits it with a machete.

food  They eat antelope, forest buffalos, cane rats, fish, lizards, small birds and caterpillars

Animals of the rainforest  Forest elephant: can grow to be 9000 pounds. They’re hard core vegetarians.  Driver ant: small but dangerous. They are one of the most aggressive species in the rainforest. Their jaws are so strong that some forest people use them to close wounds.

 Gorillas: can be up to 5 feet 9 inches tall. They are vegetarians.  Black Columbus monkeys: they are extremely endangered. They don’t have thumbs.

Temperature and climate  the African rainforest’s rain fall is between 63 to 76 inches. The average temperature is between 73 and 80 degrees.

Countries with rainforests  Burundi, Cameroon, central African rep., the Congo, the Ivory coast, equilateral guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, and sierra Leone all contain rainforests.

The reason for deforestation  The logging companies and the government make lots of money of it.

What large river runs through the Congo basin?  The Congo is the large river that flows through the basin.
