–Why? Lack of emphasis on writing in science courses. Detachment of freshman chemistry and physics principles from real world issues. Tendency to organise knowledge into unrelated “chapters” of materials. –What? To reflect upon the materials. Provides a clearer understanding of the subject. Active learning. Writing to learn, to organize and to understand course materials and to communicate.
