WHAT IS UNPACKING ANYWAY?

Our work for this afternoon: Looking at the OCG more closely Discovering how to use the Learning Targets as you plan Stress free assessments!!! (how about that?) Collaborative plan time

5 Major Steps in Planning for a Unit: The first four steps follow a sequence: 1. Discussion of big ideas 2. Understanding of learning outcomes 3. Agreement regarding assessing proficiency 4. Collaboration regarding teaching strategies The fifth step, learning, may occur at any point in the process. 5. Teams need to constantly monitor their own understanding and recognize when it is time to “Stop, Drop and Learn!”

Look at the unit you brought for planning. Predict which steps will take the longest Where do you need the most learning?

Step 1: Big Ideas Read the Unit Description in General Information Section on the OCG

Step 1: Big Ideas Read the Essential Questions and Enduring Understandings

Is this a place to stop and learn more about the big ideas of the unit?

Step 2: Learning Outcomes Study standards, knowledge and skills, & learning targets

Digging into Learning Outcomes

Is this a place to stop and do any additional learning around the learning outcomes of the unit?

Step 3: Defining Proficient What does proficient work look like? Look at Stage 2 What else will you use to assess?

Assessment Focus: As a collaborative team, it is important to decide … What common assessments will be used? What other assessment ideas might you share with your team for some or all students? Remember: Assessments can be informal or formal. There should be formative assessments throughout the unit to check for progress towards specific unit learning targets.

Is this a place to stop and do any additional learning around assessment proficiency?

Step 4: Lesson Planning

Is this a place to stop and learn more about learning strategies for teaching intended learning outcomes?

Step 4: Lesson Planning This is the fun part Check out the new format Check out the new resources You choose: Are there lessons you want to use from Stage 3? Do you want to create your own lessons? What materials will you use?

Step 4: Lesson Planning As you plan lessons you will think about your individual students. Lessons might look different from classroom to classroom. Adjust plans throughout the unit as needed.

Today’s Work Send Off: Today you will work in groups to plan a unit of your choice. We will be conferring with groups. Please let one of us know when you get to Step 3!!!

Debrief: What were some of the challenges? What were some of the things that went well? What are some resources, ideas, or new learning that you would like to share?
