THE PERIMETER TRIANGLE AND THE PASSING GAME The Perimeter triangle forms around our Mike and the Defensive Ends. This creates the core of our frontal attack. Much like the “Shoot the Sidelines” concept for defending the edges and the Alley we can apply it to a screen or flat pass.

THE PERIMETER TRIANGLE AND THE PASSING GAME The Defensive Ends reading pass will drop into their zone for coverage, while the OLB’s, Mike and other supporting defensive players defend as they would in the “Shoot the Sidelines” concept. Here is a look at the Defender Zones.

THE PERIMETER TRIANGLE AND THE PASSING GAME In this example the front six rush the line of scrimmage as the offensive back field begins the play. The TB takes a fake handoff and runs forward while the FB runs a flat route. The BSDE hunting the near hip of the deepest back, reads pass.

THE PERIMETER TRIANGLE AND THE PASSING GAME Assuming the pass has been thrown and completed to the FB coming out of the backfield. Our back defenders would attack the ball carrier as they would in the “Shoot the Sidelines”. The BSOLB attacks while maintaining outside leverage, the FSOLB bounces over aiding in any cutback by the ball carrier, The mike attacks with a “Kill Shot” path, while the BSCB collapses to position himself to contain the outside and the FSCB caps the alley. THE PERIMETER TRIANGLE AND THE PASSING GAME Reading pass the DE diverts from his backfield path and flows into his zone for pass coverage. While flowing he is reading the QB’s up field shoulder and face mask.
