Content Management Systems

CMS DEFINED: A system of collective procedures used to manage various work flows in a collaborative environment. A system designed to manage content.

BASIC FUNCTIONALITY: CMS's are used to: Capture Store Organize Control Revise Enrich and Disseminate data.

CMS PROCEDURES ARE PRIMARILY DESIGNED TO ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: (1)Allow for a large number of people to contribute to and share stored data. Particularly important when managing specific business intelligence (ie. SCM, CRM, FSA)

(2) Control access to data, based on user roles (which information users can view, edit, publish, etc.) CMS PROCEDURES ARE PRIMARILY DESIGNED TO ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES:

(3) Aid in easy storage and retrieval of data CMS PROCEDURES ARE PRIMARILY DESIGNED TO ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES:

(4) Reduce repetitive duplicate input CMS PROCEDURES ARE PRIMARILY DESIGNED TO ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: A central repository to eliminate redundancies in work processing.

(5) Improve communication between users CMS PROCEDURES ARE PRIMARILY DESIGNED TO ACCOMPLISH THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES: Real-time information updates and integrated collaboration channels.

3 TYPES OF MANAGEABLE CONTENT FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE: (1) Organizational Information Information is often integrated within a database whereby information is continually changing as it relates to business activities. Information in this case, is organization specific, ranging from SCM, CRM, ERP activities to HR data such as accounts payable.

3 TYPES OF MANAGEABLE CONTENT FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE: (2) External Information This consists of information that is external to the business, but nevertheless, has implications to business processes, standard operating procedures, regulations, accounting etc. Some of these types of data might come from branches of government, various stock exchanges, market analysis, industry trends etc.

3 TYPES OF MANAGEABLE CONTENT FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE: (3) Personal Information This type of information might come in the form of expertise from knowledge workers, subject matter experts, and general personal experience. Personal information types are also useful to feed expert systems and artificial intelligence platforms for decision support systems, which work in tandem with a CMS.
