Relevance of the consolidated edition ISBD for national bibliographies Professor Mirna Willer, PhD University of Zadar Department of Information Sciences Zadar, Croatia 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Contents  Introductory remark  ISBD Consolidated Edition, 2011  ISBD standard and the FRBR conceptual model  ISBD and multiple formats and mixed media resources  Direction of future revision of ISBD: a view so far…  Concluding remark 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Introductory remark Michael Gorman, The Origins and Making of the ISBD: A Personal History, (CCQ, 2014) “In theory, the ISBD should not have worked. With the wisdom of more than four decades of hindsight, it is easy to see the fundamental mistakes that were made in creating the ISBD and the haphazard nature of the events that influenced the creation. […] but, despite all that, it did and does work well, even in a digital age that was inconceivable when the ISBD was formulated. The fact is that the ISBD has been in use throughout the world and has served libraries and their users well. Great caution should be exercised in replacing the ISBD. It would be cataloguing vandalism to abandon it without a satisfactory replacement.” 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

ISBD Consolidated Edition, 2011  the result of the second general revision project started in the beginning of 2000  In 2003, the ISBD Review Group set up the Study Group on Future Directions of the ISBDs the result of which work was the decision that the consolidation of all ISBDs was feasible  The preliminary consolidated edition was published in 2009, and the official one in 2011  Statement of International Cataloguing Principles (ICP) published in 2009 state in the fifth section devoted to bibliographic description that “Descriptive data should be based on an internationally agreed standards”, pointing in the footnote to the ISBD. 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

ISBD standard and the FRBR conceptual model  The entities of the FRBR model, relevant to the bibliographic description are Work, Expression, Manifestation and Item, while the attributes are based on the elements of bibliographic description in ISBDs and UNIMARC bibliographic format  the term resource is used instead of publication or item since the publication of ISBD(ER), and not manifestation  The Mapping ISBD Elements to FRBR Entity Attributes and Relationships, /11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

ISBD standard and the FRBR conceptual model  FRBR Final Report, Basic Requirements for National Bibliographic Records, or the minimum data requirements, Chapter 7 to ISBD 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October Descriptive elementFRBRISBDNote Title and statement of responsibility area RM title proper (including number/name of part) RMA parallel title(s)R FRBR: Parallel titles should be included in the basic record to the extent that the national bibliographic agency considers them important to users. statement(s) of responsibility identifying the individual(s) and/or group(s) with principal responsibility for the content RMA Edition areaR edition statementRMA additional edition statementRMA

ISBD standard and the FRBR conceptual model  The first type of ISBD stipulations (rules) is that an element is mandatory in the description if applicable to a specific type of a resource being catalogued, or whether it is available  The second type of ISBD stipulations refers the decision of entering bibliographic data into a description to the discretion of a cataloguer or a bibliographer and their estimation of whether the elements are needed for identification of the resource or whether they are important to the users of the catalogue or bibliography  opens the space for national cataloguing rules or rules for a national bibliography 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

ISBD and multiple formats and mixed media resources  ISBD(G): General, published as early as The standard introduced a new element, following the title proper, General Material Designation (GMD), and a new area, the Material (or type of publication) specific area, i.e., area 3  In 2003, the ISBD Review Group appointed a Material Designations Study Group to investigate the general and specific material designations (GMD/SMD)  JSC/RDA and representatives from the publishing community (EDItEUR/ONIX), RDA/ONIX Framework for Resource Categorization, 2006:  Content refers to the intellectual or artistic content of a resource, and carrier refers to the means and methods by which content is conveyed 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

ISBD and multiple formats and mixed media resources  0 Content Form and Media Type Area  The area and two elements are mandatory  0.1 Content form: one or more terms reflecting the fundamental form or forms in which the content of a resource is expressed, to which may be added one or more content qualifications  0.2 Media type: indicating the type or types of carrier used to convey the content of the resource  elements are taken from the closed list of terms 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

ISBD and multiple formats and mixed media resources 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October Music (notated ; tactile) : unmediated Music (notated ; visual) : electronic Music (performed) : audio and:Spoken word : audio.

ISBD and multiple formats and mixed media resources  The rearrangement of area 3, Material or Type of Resource Specific Area 3.1 Mathematical data (Cartographic resources) 3.2 Music format statement (Notated music) 3.3 Numbering (Serials)  extent of resource (Electronic resources) was deprecated or deleted  the resource’s electronic aspect is deleted from area 3 because it is considered to be a carrier type, the medium of the same type as are audio or microform. The electronic media type is defined in area 0: For computer-enabled resources 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Direction of future revision of ISBD: a view so far…  Preparation for the revision process,  Cataloguing Section’s Standing Committee: the ISBD Strategy  Cape Town, August 2015: recommendation that ISBD should not be considered alone but in the context of the CS’s overall development and maintenance strategy in relation to the Statement of International Cataloguing Principles (ICP), the new FRBR-LRM conceptual model, and, eventually UNIMARC  ISBD Review Group’s view of the future revision  the alignment of the ISBD with the FRBR model, and the representation of ISBD in the Semantic Web standard Resource Description Framework (RDF) 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Direction of future revision of ISBD: a view so far…  Representing ISBD in RDF format,  sub-group ISBD/XML Study Group  ISBD Linked Data Study Group  ISBD, 2011: aim to “enhance the portability of bibliographic data in the Semantic Web environment”  IFLA domain dedicated to publishing its standards namespaces: /11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Direction of future revision of ISBD: a view so far…  The alignment of the ISBD with the FRBR model  Mapping ISBD Elements to FRBR Entity Attributes and Relationships, /11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Direction of future revision of ISBD: a view so far…  How do we do the mapping between the ISBD resource and FRBR entities WEMI?  Resource Description Framework (RDF): requires that (meta)data is expressed in single, “atomic” statements which are composed of three parts, so called triples: subject (subject of the statement) – predicate (nature of the statement) – object (value of the statement) 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Direction of future revision of ISBD: a view so far…  Resource and Work, Expression, Manifestation, Item. Gordon Dunsire, 28 July 2013, Amended 6 October 2013, following comments by Patrick Le Boeuf and discussion at IFLA 2013: „The basic relationship between Resource and WEMI is therefore whole-part/aspect: Expression, Item, Manifestation, and Work are partial aspects of Resource.  Resource has-aspect Expression; Expression is-aspect-of Resource  Resource has-aspect Item; Item is-aspect-of Resource  Resource has-aspect Manifestation; Manifestation is-aspect-of Resource Resource has-aspect Work; Work is-aspect-of Resource”. 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Direction of future revision of ISBD: a view so far…  The mapping between vocabularies 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Concluding remark  Committee on Standards, Cape Town, 2015:  considered the report from the ISBD Review Group chair as to the direction of the ISBD revision  IFLA will support its standards as long as it finds them relevant: ISBD  ISBD Review Group. Draft minutes, Cape Town, 2015:  the consolidated FRBR-LRM (Library Reference Model) which, being more abstract than the FRBR, will have enormous impact on the ISBD  all material related to the revision process, such as notes from the ISBD 2011 revision process, comments recorded in the survey on the use of ISBD, proposals for revision of the Inclusion of Unpublished Resources in ISBD Study Group, ISBD LD SG comments and proposals, etc., be compiled 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October

Concluding remark  The main objective of this new revision of the ISBD is to enable the publication of bibliographic data as linked open data that can be linked to data produced by other agencies and services by machines, as well as to be re- used by them. 17/11/2015 II International Bibliography Congress, Moscow, October
