ASP Seminar Series Update ASP Retreat 15 October 2007

Overview Purpose of Seminar Series How speakers were chosen Format of Seminars speakers

Goals of Series Expose post-docs to a variety of different research topics within atmospheric science via talks meant for a broad scientific audience Chance to engage scientists from local community

Parameters of Series Want speakers who can give talks that can be understood and enjoyed by a wide variety of scientists Series of seminars should reflect broad disciplines of all post-docs Must be from local community

Procedure Sent an to all post-docs in late August asking for nominations for speakers, followed up a week later Received 30 nominations from the post- docs

Decision Process Seminar committee sorts through the nominations Grouped potential speakers by research area Identified research areas that were not represented, asked post-docs working in those areas who they think would be good choices Ranked speakers within research area Extended invitations to one speaker from each area

Seminars Third Wednesday of each month (exception is Nov. 14) at 11:00 a.m. Location depends on speaker’s area of research (i.e., a climate speaker will be at Mesa Lab) 45 minute talk followed by discussion period BRING QUESTIONS!!!!

Post-Seminar Lunch Immediately after the seminar in the NCAR cafeteria Good chance to further discuss research ideas or the seminar with the speaker Provides an opportunity to learn about the speaker’s career path and solicit career advice. Open to All!
