Chapter 3 Perception

Definition of Perception History of the study of perception Steps of Perception Selective Perception Factors affecting Selective Perception Perception and reality

What is perception? We use the term perception to refer to the ability to perceive or understand objects in the real world Perception in humans describes the process whereby sensory stimulation is translated into organized experience. Perception encompasses all processes associated with the recognition, transformation and organization of sensory information

Steps of Perception Receiving stimulus Receiving and recording information Interpretation(الترجمة) Behavioral response

Selective Perception The selective perception means that the person selects the information he/she receives to be kept in his mind and added to his/her perception groups. This means that: The perception is different from one person to another. Selective perception reflects the person’s interest, values, abilities and experience. The information received will be interpreted differently from one person to another

Factors affecting Selective Perception Factors related to stimulus characteristics (size or volume, intensity..etc) Factors related to person characteristics (Values and attitudes, Needs and motive..etc).

Factors related to the stimulus Stimulus period or intense Volume or size Variance Frequency Motion Recency (see the pictures)

Factors related to person characteristics Values and attitudes. Needs and motives. Beliefs. Tension and anxiety(قلق). Culture and social standards.
