Predicted trends for 2012

Views of IT professionals “Accenture’s CIO Mobility Survey found that two-thirds (67%) of CIOs and other IT professionals believe mobility will impact their businesses as much as or more than the Internet did in the 1990s. The global study found that there’s a striking contrast between IT leaders in emerging markets – where 94% plan to boost mobile spending – and in mature markets, where the figure is 35%. Similarly, the survey found that 48% of respondents in emerging markets have an extensively developed mobile strategy, while only 12% of respondents in mature markets claim the same. The study also found a few areas of concern complicating the adoption of mobility by enterprises. 50% cited security as the leading factor preventing them from addressing their mobile priorities; cost and budget ranked second (43%), while 26% cited either interoperability with current systems. Mobility isn’t a one-shot deal, either. The rising penetration of smartphones and tablets is compressing IT innovation cycles for the enterprise to months. Companies should review their mobile strategy every six to 12 months to ensure that they’re placing their bets on the right trends.”

Future The movement towards mobile devices takes away from the need for desktops in offices, and the offices themselves, how far will this go? The mobile devices are currently simply data collectors and viewers, will their role expand to trusted data processors? What are the security implications for companies who use their employees’ devices for this work?
