 Part of speech: Noun  Definition: foe, opponent, adversary  Sentence: In most stories, the hero always manages to defeat the antagonist.  Note the prefix anti, meaning “against.”

 Part of speech: noun  Definition: sympathy, helpfulness or mercy  Sentences: She showed her compassion when she took the injured cat home and kept it comfortable until it died.  Note the suffix ion meaning “act, result, or state of.”

 Part of speech: adjective  Definition: careful and hard-working  Sentence: Due to his diligent work, the business grew from a single shop to a national chain over 35 states.

 Part of speech: noun  Definition: irritation, frustration  Sentence: My exasperation with my secretary grew each time she forgot to ask for a caller’s phone number – I finally had to fire her.  Note the prefix ex meaning out, and the suffix “ate” meaning having or showing.

 Part of speech: adjective  Definition: rash, impulsive, acting without thinking  Sentence: By a stroke of luck, my impetuous decisions created a huge profit for the company that year – but I could have just as easily been responsible for the company’s demise.
