Tips on Draft 1 of your Essay

Essay Brainstorm The essay brainstorm is a chance for you to organize ideas in a logical way so we can write about it. Organize your Brainstorm by doing the following: -Select 4 Reasons supporting your side -Narrow list to 3 and organize in 2/3/1 Format -Select 2 Reasons supporting the other side. -Select Weakest Reason -Disprove other side w/rebuttal.

Outline Intro (Hook, Thesis, Subtopics [2/3/1, Counterargument, Rebuttal]) -Subtopic #1: (2 nd Best Reason for your Side) -Subtopic #2: (3rd Best Reason for your Side) -Subtopic #3: (Best Reason for your Side) -Subtopic #4: (Counterargument – Other Side) -Subtopic #5: (Rebuttal – Disproving to Other Side) Conclusion (Restate Thesis, Restate Subtopics, So What?).

Introduction

The Hook As you already know, a hook is an attention grabber that grabs the attention of the reader. In a research paper, a hook should be a statistic, quote, or fact that is cited with an in-text citation. For the purposes of this essay, please use a rhetorical device in your hook.

An Appeal to Ethos as a Hook Example: In 1952 Jonas Salk discovered a vaccine for Polio (Encarta, 2006). According to the founder of the World Health Organization, “Salk’s discovery changed the way that the world fought against the Polio virus” (

A Rhetorical Question as a Hook Would you like to live in a world where all children are immunized for curable diseases like dysentery? Would you like to live in a world where the infant mortality rate is 1 out of 5 in the developing world? (

An Appeal to Pathos as a Hook According to the United Nations International Children’s Eradication Fund (UNICEF), 1 out of 3 children in Africa have a relative who suffers from HIV and/or AIDS. (

The Thesis The thesis is your overriding statement that announces the main topic of your essay. In a research paper, once you have read a variety of sources, you are ready to form a thesis statement that answers your research question.

Research Question to Thesis: Turn your thesis into a statement. Research Question: Should states regulate the use of cell phones in moving vehicles? Thesis Statement: States should regulate use of cell phones on the road because many drivers are using the phones irresponsibly and causing accidents.

Body Paragraphs – 2/3/1

Analyzing Source When you cite a source make sure you explain why you are using it and how it is important to your thesis. This involves three steps: setting up the source citing the source analyzing the source.

Setting Up Sources (Citation Sandwich) Step 1 Explain (Topic Sentence) the context for using the source. Step 2: Cite (Quote, Statistic, Fact) the source. Step 3: Analyze (Explain how the citation ties to your thesis) how it relates to your thesis and connect it to a rhetorical device.

Can you identify the Hook, Thesis, Subtopics? Since 1952, the amount of children suffering from the polio vaccine worldwide has been reduced by 90% (CDC.org). Because of the discovery of the Polio Vaccine by Jonas Salk, Polio has been virtually eradicated from the planet. This essay will discuss the definition of Polio, how the World Health Organization has immunized children against Polio throughout the world, and how Jonas Salk should be considered a hero for saving the lives of millions of children. Some would argue that Polio is still a threat today, but I will prove that those threats are false.
