Acids, Bases & Salts
What do you know about… Acids Bases or alkalis salts
Chemical Makeup Acids, bases and salts are all ionic compounds Acids contain hydrogen ions (H+) Ex. HCl, H 2 SO 4 Base contain hydroxide ions (OH-) Ex. NaOH Salts contain other positive and negative ions Ex. MgO, NaCl
Classify these…. Ca(OH) 2 H 3 PO 4 FeO MgSO 4 NH 4 OH HBr
Aqueous solutions Acids, bases and salts all release ions when dissolved in water Acids release H+ ions Bases relese OH- ions Salts release other + and - ions
Properties Which ones conduct electricity? (acids, bases and salts) Which one reacts with metals to form H 2 gas? (acids) Which one turns red litmus paper blue? (base) Which one turns blue litmus paper red? (acid)
Water Is water an acid or a base? Neither - Why? water is neutral because it contains equal numbers of H+ ions and OH- ions (H 2 O = HOH)
The pH Scale Measures how acidic or basic something is Scale goes from 0 to 14 Each number is 10X as acidic or basic as the next number Less than 7 = acid Greater than 7 = base 7 = neutral
