EFFECT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON AGRICULTURE SYSTEM C. P. Srivastava Deputy Director of Agriculture, U.P. Govt.

PARTS OF AGRICULTURAL SYSTEM 1-CROPS 2-SOILS 3-LIVE STOCK 4-FISHERIES 5-PESTS

IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON INDIAN AGRICULTURE THE YIELD OF CROPS, INCREASE BY 10-15% AS CO 2 LEVEL ROSE FROM 370 PPM TO 550 PPM LOSS OF 4-5 MILLION TONNES IN WHEAT PRODUCTION WITH EVERY RISE OF 1 0 C THROUGHOUT THE GROWING PERIOD.

INCREASE IN DROUGHT, FLOODS, HEAVY PRECIPITATION EVENTS. HOT EXTREME, HEAT WAVES WILL RESULT IN GREATER INSTABILITY IN FOOD PRODUCTION, AND THREATEN LIVELIHOOD SECURITY OF FARMERS. THE NUTRITIONAL QUALITY OF CEREALS AND PULSES WILL BE AFFECTED. WHICH, IN TURN, WILL HAVE CONSEQUENCES FOR NUTRITIONAL SECURITY.

DYNAMICS OF CROP AND ANIMAL PESTS WILL CHANGE SIGNIFICANTLY WITH CLIMATE CHANGE LEADING TO YIELD LOSSES. CLIMATE CHANGE IS LIKELY TO AGGRAVATE HEAT STRESS IN DAIRY ANIMALS; ADVERSELY AFFECTING THEIR PRODUCTIVE AND REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE. A RISE IN TEMPERATURE WILL AFFECT MORTALITY OF FISH AND THEIR GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION.

Assessment Report of IPCC 1- In the Atmosphere CO PPM379 PPM 2-Methane715 PPb1774 PPb 3-Nitrous oxide270 PPb319 PPb

STRATEGIES Strengthen research on development of ‘adverse climate tolerant’ genotypes and land-use systems to ensure adequate food productions. Biotechnology and modern tools of information technology, space technology and communication have a great role to play. Provide Value-added climatic risk management services to farmers in the form of reliable weather forecasts, and associated agro-advisories in different agro climatic regions. Early-warning systems for emerging climatic risks, drought, floods, heat and cold waves, and for pests and diseases outbreaks are desired.

Provide financial incentives to farmers for resource ( carbon, water, energy ) conservation and efficient use. Enhance investment in water storage and efficient water-use technologies. In the future scenario of changing rainfall patterns and decreasing irrigation water availability associated with global warming, we should invest in technologies that allow aquifer recharge, and drip and sprinklers to increase efficient use of available water.

Mobilize national and international opinions to make food security and poverty alleviation central theme in climate negotiations. International climate change negotiations must also ensure that the vulnerability of farmers and poverty alleviation are also simultaneously addressed while GHG emissions are reduced.
