Esters We are learning to:- Name and describe the production of esters

How to make an ester Heat a carboxylic acid and an alcohol under reflux and with a concentrated sulphuric acid catalyst. ++ Methanol + Ethanoic Acid  Methyl Ethanoate + Water Alcohol + Carboxylic Acid  Ester + Water

Naming Esters Name the alcohol part first Remove the ‘anol’ and add ‘yl’ e.g. if using pentanol it starts with pentyl Name the carboxylate second Remove the ‘anoic acid’ and add ‘anoate’ e.g. if using ethanoic acid, it ends with enthanoate. Pentanol + ethanoic acid  pentyl ethanoate + water

What are esters? Ethanol + methanoic acid

What are esters? Pentanoic acid + ethanol

What are esters?
