MELODY WANGWU CECILIA WU ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

ALKANES, ALKENES, ALKYNES Tip to remember: A-E-I(Y)……o…u… (in vowel order) Alkanes comes first, then alkenes has two less Hydrogens than Alkanes, alkynes two less than alkenes. Alkanes: C n H 2n+2 Alkenes: C n H 2n Alkynes: C n H 2n-2

PREFIXES From Meth- to Hept-: M elody E ats P epperoni B ut P epperoni H ates H er

FUNCTIONAL GROUPS WAYS TO MEMORIZE THEM

ALCOHOL  R—OH Tip to remember: Look for the C-OH in alCOHol *R = representation of carbon chain OH! I have to finish studying my functional groups for the marking period assessment!

ETHER  R-O-R’ Tip to remember: Ether sounds like “either”, and there are carbons on either side of the Oxygen.

ALDEHYDE AND KETONE Tips to remember: the diagonal strokes in K indicate the double bond with the oxygen OR Aldehyde before kEtone  aldehyde has one less Carbon chain than ketone Also, Aldehyde has an “H”, the “H” stands for the bond with a Hydrogen instead of another Carbon chain.

CARBOXYLIC ACID Tip to remember: “BOX” stands for boxed wine, or alCOHol. The “Y” in “Carboxylic” represents the double bond with Oxygen

ESTER Tip to remember: Ester sounds like Ether, which sounds like Either. There are still two carbons on either side of a single bonded oxygen, but on one carbon there is another double bonded Oxygen branching off.

AMINE Tip to remember: The “N” in “Amine” represents Nitrogen (the only common functional group without oxygen)
