 Described as a person who teaches, support, counsels, mentor, coaches, evaluate, serves as professional role model and aids in the socialization to a new role. 3

 Helps an individual focus on a specific aspect of behavior, performance, or life.  Focus is on learning and self- awareness. A coach helps the individual find their own best answer. 4

 Looks after and guides the novice through a more personal, long-term relationship.  helps to ‘open door’ for individual, to assist in gaining entry into places and experiences they may not have access to on their own. 5

You have the ability to motivate others to follow your excellent example willingly. Bring out the best in people (students) and are sources of guidance for others. Is in a position to have a positive influence on others. 6

 Schon ( 1990 ) suggests that the student cannot be taught what he needs to know, but can be coached. He emphasized the use of effective role modelling to facilitate the development of practice knowledge. 8

1. Model the role of professional. 2. Demonstrate effective interaction/ communication skills with the colleagues, patients, physician and preceptee. 3. Demonstrating knowledgeable about the work you do. 9

4. Show respect for your patient & co- worker. 6. Demonstrate a strong sense of commitment to your role as a CI 7. Adhere to ethical principles in carrying out your duty. 8. Foster a spirit of inquiry, critical thinking and reflection when working with preceptees and colleagues. 10

9. Ability to provide feedback effectively and promptly to Preceptee. 10. Ability to provide accessibility and encouragement to preceptee for completion of projects/ objectives. 11

 To communicate learning needs to the CI.  To fulfill the set learning needs/ goals  To communicate any concerns immediately.  To seek feedback and ask questions.  To attend lectures as programmed  To engage with the CI, and respond to advice. 20

 To accept responsibility for own conduct.  To keep a record for planned meeting with CI and the development of diary/ portfolio.  Utilize the appropriate resources available, to aid in the development.  To have regular and sustained contact with CI. 21
