BALUSTRADE  A row of repeating posts which support the upper rail of railing. Staircases and porches often have ballustrades

Columns  An upright pillar or post Tuscan

Cornice  The uppermost section of moldings along the top of a wall or just below a roof.

Dentil Molding  A series of closely spaced rectangular blocks that form a molding.

DORMER WINDOW  Window that projects from the gable of a house  Gives light to the attic or room beneath it

FANLIGHT  A semicircular, window found over a door or window

Pediment  A triangular, arched, or another creative design at the top of a door

Palladian Window  A large window divided into three parts. The center section is larger and has an arch above

Pilasters  Decorative flattened column that would attach to the front of a house next to a door

Portico  A tall, open porch supported by columns  Over a front entrance

Turret  A small tower that is part of a building. Usually round and corbelled (sticks out) from a corner

Crown Molding  Crown molding encapsulates a large family of moldings which are designed to gracefully flare out to a finished top edge; generally used for capping walls, pilasters, cabinets; used extensively in the creation of interior and exterior cornice assemblies and door and window hoods. CHAIR RAIL  Chair rail is used as a decorative border 32 inches off the floor. Chair rail molding protects the wall from chairs, but this is only one of the uses of this versatile style of molding.
