Presentation transcript:

1.1 – What is Science?

What is Science? Science is … Knowledge – what we know A process – how we discover new things Driven by curiosity Asking questions about nature Finding the answer

How is Curiosity involved in Science? Curiosity has led to the creation and use of tools, language, and other technology. Science begins with curiosity and ends with discovery.

What is Technology? Technology is the use of knowledge (science) to solve problems. Applies knowledge that is discovered through scientific means. T.V., telephone, computers Science and technology depend on each other Advances in one lead to advances in the other

What are the Branches of Science? Science is divided into two branches social science natural science

How is Natural Science Divided? Natural science is our focus and is divided further into: Physical Science – chemistry and physics Earth and Space Science – astronomy and geology Life Science - biology

Chemistry Studies the composition (makeup), structure, properties (characteristics), and reactions of matter

Physics Studies matter and energy, and how they interact through forces and motion

Biology Studies living things, their origin, and their behavior

Big Ideas in Science Scientists are discovering new knowledge ALL the time. All agree that Universes is old and HUGE Matter is made up of atoms, takes up space, and changes phases. Forces cause changes in motion. Energy is transferred from one object to another. It is also converted from one form to another.

Remember Science … is knowledge and a process. answers questions about the natural world. These answers can CHANGE, especially if new information / knowledge comes along changes all the time.
