Managing the Environment and Resources

 The TVA stands for the Tennessee Valley Authority.  The TVA was created in  The TVA was created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his social reform package ( (New Deal) to help bring America out of the Great Depression.

 To give jobs the thousands of Americans during the great depression.  To give the country a regional electricity provider using the burning of coal in East Tennessee as well as the use of hydroelectric power created by dams.  Lastly the TVA created an option for flood control for rivers prone to flooding.

 In the 1930s, the TVA:  Developed fertilizers  Helped replant forests  Improve habitat for wildlife and fish.  And the most dramatic change in regional life came from the electricity generated by TVA dams.  In fact, all lakes in the state of Tennessee are man made lakes because of dams except for one (Reelfoot lake).

 The EPA stands for the Environmental Protection Agency.  The EPA was created December 2,  The EPA was created because for years, people and factories wantonly polluted the air and water.

 Smokestack omissions and automobile exhausts made air pollution so bad in certain communities that some people died and many were hospitalized.  Raw sewage, and industrial wastes had been discharged into rivers and lakes without regard for the cumulative effect that made our waters unfit for drinking, swimming, and boating.

 The following are accomplishments of the EPA:  Clean Air Act:  Provided plans for pollution of air and water by factories and individuals. Set emission standards for how much pollution can be placed into the atmosphere (cut down on global warming. )  Emission standards with moving sources (cars, planes, ETC).  Requires all moving vehicles to be tested to ensure that harmful chemicals are not being emitted.

WHAT HAS THE EPA DONE?  The EPA has also been responsible for certifying products with the energy star label (products that use less energy) to promote a healthy environment.

 Given America the “Clean Water Act,” requiring government to disclose the contaminants in their drinking water as well as bringing money to help citizens the chance to have safe drinking water.

 The EPA has cut back on the emission of lead.  Lead is a toxic metal. Lead also can be emitted into the air from industrial sources and lead can enter drinking water from plumbing materials. Lead may cause a range of health effects, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and death. Children six years old and under are most at risk.  Lead is found in air, dust, and soil because of its use in the past.
