Christianity

Christianity hearth = Israel/Jerusalem (city in Israel)

Founder: Jesus. While Jesus is depicted as more Anglo (white) looking in art with which we are familiar, he most likely was more olive-skinned being as he was Middle Eastern. Below is a picture that shows his appearance as more Middle Eastern Branches: Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox (in Russia)

Universalizing or Ethnic? Universalizing (it has a founder; it is widespread) Regions of practice: North America, South America, Europe, Australia, places imperialized by Europeans

Conversion: Accept the basic precepts of Christianity; some denominations include baptism Man is sinful and this separates people from God Jesus = fully man and fully God Jesus died and rose from the dead to take care of people’s sin Holy Sites (based on the life of the founder) Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem

Church of the Holy Sepulchre – on the site where they believe Jesus was crucified Disposal of the Dead: burial The picture to the right is of a cemetery in New Orleans. Why are the burial sites above ground?

Religious landscape: Holidays center around events in the founders life; wayside shrines; churches

Stations of the Cross Shrine at San Luis, Colorado For each of the stations of the cross, there is an almost life sized bronze sculpture – beautiful!

Diffusion (how it spread): If you see lines that go into Europe, you will know it’s Christianity

Beliefs: Trinity – God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one Jesus is fully human and fully God Jesus died and resurrected from the dead

Lifestyle Impacts: Political impacts – there is a tendency to be anti-abortion and pro-abstinence Calendar: The Gregorian calendar is today's internationally accepted civil calendar and is also known as the "Western calendar" or "Christian calendar". It was named after the man who first introduced it in February 1582: Pope Gregory XIII. For Catholic branch, during the season of Lent no meat on Fridays and one chooses to give up something for Lent Baptism rituals in different branches
