 Britain colonizing Australia in 1788 with convicted criminals. Prisons in England were overcrowded so they established a penal colony in Australia. Many European nations use penal colony in Australia as a way to prevent overcrowding of their prison. When they’re release, the freed convicts could buy land and settle as free men and women.

 European settlement New Zealand didn’t grow quickly. British settlers in New Zealand were convicts who had escaped from Australia. Australia began seeking to convert the Maoris to Christianity. Maoris accepted British rule in exchange for recognition of their land rights. British quickly established colonies around New Zealand.
