Indonesia is located a few hundred kilometres North-West of Australia. It lies on the equator and stretches about 6400km from East to West. Australia is its closest neighbour. Indonesia is made of around 17 thousand islands. Of this 17 thousand, only half are named, and only 992 have people who live on the permanently. There are six main islands in Indonesia: Java, Bali, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Sumatra and Irian Jaya.

Indonesia has beautiful landscapes on each island. Indonesia has only to seasons, wet and dry. Volcanoes are a big part in the Indonesian land. There are 400 in total, but only 100 are still active. Because of volcanic ash and consistent rainfall each season, Indonesia has very fertile soil. This means crops can grow quite easily. There are different types of animals in Indonesia too what there are in Australia. These animals include: Tigers Elephants Orang-utans Rhinoceroses Kancil (miniature deer) There are many more, but it’s hard to fit all of them.

Indonesia has many traditional foods. They are known for their rice and spices. In fact, the main crop harvested each year is rice. Spices make Indonesian food much nicer. The most popular spices are Cumin, Turmeric and Coriander. Fruits are a pretty big production too. Mangos, bananas, papayas, rambutans and durians are the most popular.

Indonesia has a diverse culture. There are four main religions that people follow. These are: Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity. The place where Muslim’s worship is called a mosque, in Indonesian this is called a Mesjid. The population of Indonesia is 239,870,937. as you can see on the graph, most people are Muslim.
