What is it? A fashion designer designs clothes for people to wear. There are many different areas of fashion design, including women’s wear, men’s wear, and couture, among others. My ideal career is to specialize in couture. I chose this career because it is a way to transform pure art into a wearable form.

Haute Couture Couture is a type of fashion which focuses on the aesthetic rather than the practical. Some well-known coutriers include Dior, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, and Versace. A single couture dress can take three months to make.

Colleges There are many excellent art colleges all over the country, which offer classes on all kinds of arts, including fashion design. If you live in northern California and are looking to build a substantial career in the arts, San Francisco is one of the best places to go. It has a good selection of some of the highest-rated art schools in the state, and numerous opportunities for employment and to showcase your work.

Secondary Career My alternative career choice is to be an artist.

Why did I choose this? I chose ‘artist’ as a secondary career because, while it is something I enjoy doing and am fairly good at, it is much harder to make a living from. The distinction between the fine arts and other arts is that they are simply for visual enjoyment and have no practical use. ‘Fine arts’ is a broad category which denotes a spectrum of subcategories, including these: Painting, Sculpting, Drawing, and others.
