 Three Conditions Should Be Met › Trust, rapport, and confidence established › Agreement on the existing problem › Some preliminary exploration of the problem (Pardeck, 1994)

 Identification › Reader associates herself with a character and events  Catharsis › Reader shares feelings & motivations of character  Insight › Reader realizes her situation can be dealt with more effectively by imitating or adopting ideas from the reading materials (Bodart, 1980, Gregory & Vessey, 2004, Shrodes, 1950)
